In Vivo Biological Evaluation of Biodegradable Nanofibrous Membranes Incorporated with Antibiofilm Compounds

Guided bone regeneration involves excluding non-osteogenic cells from the surrounding soft tissues and allowing osteogenic originating native to inhabit defect. The aim of this work was fabricate, analyze antibiofilm activity evaluate in vivo biological response poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) electrospun membranes incorporated with tea tree oil furan-2(5H)-one. Samples were exposed Streptococcus mutans culture after 48 h incubation, biofilm evaluated by colony forming units (CFU/mL) followed scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, seventy-five Balb-C mice divided into five experimental groups for subcutaneous implantation: loaded PLGA fiber membrane, furanone neat a commercially available membrane –Pratix® Sham (no-membrane implantation). Post implantation period each group (1, 3 9 weeks), samples collected processed histological descriptive semiquantitative evaluation. Results showed significant reduction bacterial attachment on furan-2(5H)-one membranes. Macrophage counts found all materials implanted, although giant predominantly associated incorporation compounds nanofibers did not incite inflammatory significantly different comparison pure membranes, indicating its potential development novel functionalized targeting inhibition biofilms membrane-grafting materials.
